How would you feel if you got a mysterious cell phone, which would lead you to winning tables in casinos or save you from an airplane crush? Echelon Conspiracy follows a man who obtains such gift.
Max Peterson (Shane West) is a computer security expert, whose services are popular all around the world. One day, after setting up a security system in Thailand, Max is given a modern cell phone from an unknown sender. Not long after unpacking the gift he receives a text message, advertising the hotel he is staying in and advising him to postpone his flight home. The message was also sent from somebody unknown. As it turns out, the plane that Max was supposed to be on crashes. The next message recommends buying some stocks, which price goes sky high by 300%. Then Max realizes that the messages he receives are not just an advertisement, but really useful stuff. When he reads the third message, Max goes to Czech Republic and makes a ton of money in a casino. Unfortunately for him, his great luck draws attention of the FBI agent Dave Grant (Ving Rhames) and casino's security chief John Reed (Edward Burns). The FBI has been investigating the text messages coming to this phone for quite a long time, but with no luck. Peterson is given a chance to avoid the prison in return of helping the FBI.
The script has many twists and keeps the action going throughout the film. That makes the viewer ignore some ridiculous parts of the movie. The most ridiculous thing is probably what the whole plot is based on. It's the Echelon, NSA's main computer that one day magically happens to be able to think and make decisions on its own. Nevertheless, I think that the movie is worth watching.
